The One Ring Foundry VTT Modules: What to Expect

Hello people!

I am Cussa, the Head of Development and Games at Hod Publishing. As Free League’s new campaign progresses, I have seen several questions popping up in different places asking for information about the modules. As we are developing them, I decided to write this post to answer some of those questions. I may update this post if we get new questions.

Before we start, I believe some context is needed. Hod Publishing has been working with Free League for more than a year and a half. We were responsible for Coriolis: The Great Dark (system and modules) and Invincible (system and modules). Besides that, we are currently the maintainers of Forbidden Lands, Vaesen, Blade Runner, Coriolis: The Third Horizon (although maintenance is currently on pause), and The Walking Dead Universe. Not only that, but we also developed the latest modules for Blade Runner (Replicant Rebellion and the Asset Pack) and Vaesen (Starter Set, Mythic Carpathia and City of My Nightmares).

So, we were extremely happy when Free League contacted us to propose that we work together to develop the modules for The One Ring RPG. Currently, we are developing the modules, but I cannot share any information about release dates, as those are entirely under Free League’s control. However, I believe that backers of the campaign will start receiving modules soon.

The main question we have seen is whether the Foundry modules would be only a “digitalisation” of the books, containing only the text in Foundry.

And the answer is: no, the modules follow the same pattern as other premium modules. They will contain all the book text, of course, with all the images, in a high-fidelity conversion. You can see some of the journals in the images below, which are from our current development build.

But that’s not all. The modules will contain all the Adversaries, Lore characters, Weapons, Armours, Fell Abilities, Distinctive Features, etc., created and configured as Actors or Items using the available Foundry system. They will also include the maps set up as Scenes and all the Rollable Tables fully configured. Not only that, but we also provide macros to make the GM’s life easier, such as rolling tables and viewing and activating scenes. In some cases, we also provide extra automation, like automatically generating a Nameless Thing! To give you an idea, these are the current counts for the Core and Starter Set modules:

Core

  • 38 Actors
  • 11 Journals
  • 198 Pages
  • 2 Scenes
  • 253 Items
  • 40 Rollable Tables
  • 37 Macros

Starter Set

  • 14 Actors
  • 17 Journals
  • 80 Pages
  • 9 Scenes
  • 2 Items
  • 4 Rollable Tables
  • 14 Macros

Please keep in mind that these numbers are from the current development build and may change before the final release. They should not be taken as final.

It is important to say that we are working closely with the system developer, Throdo, to achieve the best possible result for players. He will continue to develop the system, while we will be responsible only for the modules.

We are very excited to bring The One Ring to your Foundry games, and we hope this post gives you a clearer idea of what to expect from the modules.
